This is a Lionel 45N Vintage O Postwar Metal Automatic Gateman from 1945. The gateman was Lionels most popular accessory from the postwar era. This is the earlier all metal version which was subsequently replaced in 1950 with the plastic 145 version. When you put the track trip under the track and the train goes over it the little man comes out of the house with his lantern to say HI! A lantern illuminates until the train passes. This illuminated lantern feature was dropped in the 145.
