Here is an MTH 70-3001-1 G Scale NYC 4-6-4 J-3a Steam Locomotive & Tender w/ PS2 #5405. When the New York Central needed more power for their passenger cars, Alco answered with the J-class Hudson which MTH scaled down to create this 70-3007-1, 4-6-4 J-1e Hudson Steam Engine w/Proto-Sound 2.0 – NYC Cab No. 5405. With its tough, impact-resistant polycarbonate body, operating smoke unit and headlight, marker lights and directionally-controlled tender back-up light, MTH successfully recreated the majesty that caused the New York Central to use the Hudson as their model for passenger transportation advertising. Details like opening boiler and tender hatches, engineer and fireman figures in the well-lit cab interior, sliding cab windows, operating firebox glow, metal handrails and bell, and synchronized digital quality steam chuffing sound effects, and operating squeaking brakes and steam puffs synchronized to the locomotives speed, MTH well out did themselves. MTH also kept it easy to run with interchangeable hook & loop and operating knuckle coupler, standard DC power requirements, and measurements of 39 inches x 4 1/8 inches x 5 1/2 inches. Its precision, flywheel-equipped DC can motors and locomotive speed control keeps it running (inside or out) smoothly on R-2 curves (50.8 inches or 1290mm) and 45 mm track.

Known as the Baltic in Europe and the Hudson in North America, the 4-6-4 was introduced in the early 20th century finding success in hauling freight and as a shunting model. Their use would initially find great success on North American railways before eventually becoming mainstays in rail-yards around the world.
